Personal life

He was born in 1947 in Dallas, the son of a policeman and a teacher. His mother sang in the local gospel quartet called Vodiodo. He heard the songs of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Kingston Trio, and Mahalia Jackson. He had a problematic relationship with his alcoholic and violent father. He got the nickname “Meat” from his father at the age of two because of his overweight. At the age of 13, his football coach called him “Meat Loaf.” He also mentioned his nickname in the song “Tear Me Down on Couldn’t Have Said It Better.”
